Practice prompts with ChatGPT.

Hi all.

Knowing where to start with ChatGPT can be overwhelming, so we’ve made it easier for you! This post has prompts for all different types of English practice. Simply copy the prompt you want to use and paste it directly in ChatGPT. Of course you’re encouraged to use these prompts as inspiration, and change the prompt based on what you’re interested in and what you need to work on. 

You can select what you want to practice with ChatGPT:

Conversation

When you want to begin ChatGPT, give it instructions such as the following:

• Can you suggest topics for us to discuss?

• Let’s have a conversation about [topic].

• Let’s have a back-and-forth conversation about [topic].

• Let’s conduct a mock job interview where you will be asking my questions as if I were interviewing for a [position / job role]. Please provide feedback on my answers.

• Let’s have small talk together about [topic].

• Let’s have a conversation about [topic] and correct my mistakes. 

• Let’s have a conversation about [topic] and suggest different vocabulary / phrasal verbs I can use.

After the initial prompt, you can also ask for feedback or additional requests while having a conversation:

• Can you suggest words and expressions that I can use in this conversation?

• Can you suggest phrasal verbs that I can use in this conversation?

• Please correct my grammar mistakes in the text above.

• Please rewrite my answer and explain your changes. 

• Why did you make that suggestion?

You can also ask it to generate real-life conversations in specific situations:

• Write a conversation at a bank.

• Write a conversation at a bank about [scenario].

• Write a conversation between a customer support representative and a customer calling about a refund.

• Write a conversation between [person 1] and [person 2] about [subject]. For example: “between a bus driver and a passenger about not paying for a ticket.

• Write a conversation between three strangers about the [topic]. For example: finance, movies, sports, theatre, cars, etc.

• Write a conversation between two friends about [a specific topic]. 

• Can you rewrite this conversation and add a conflict? 

Creating Monologues & Dialogues

Example prompts you can use to generate scripts: 

• Write a dialogue between two women that is similar in style to the TV show "Law and Order”.

• Write a monologue about a broken heart.

• Write a mystery scene between two characters.

• Write a scene between two characters like a scene from the TV show Friends.

• Write a short TED talk about climate change.

• Write a speech that would sound like Michelle Obama.

Improving Writing 

You can copy a text that you’ve written into ChatGPT and request the following: 

• Can you rewrite it in a more [formal / informal] way?

• Can you rewrite it in a more polite way?

• Can you rewrite it like a formal email / blog post / article? 

• Can you simplify the vocabulary? 

• Can you make the vocabulary fancier but still natural?

• Can you suggest a better vocabulary to be used in this text?

• Can you make a list of useful [vocabulary / phrasal verbs, etc.] for this text?

• Can you rewrite using [A1 / C2, etc.] level vocabulary?

You can also request ChatGPT to write for you (modify the prompts according to your needs): 

• Can you write an email requesting a refund?

• Can you write an ad for a new beauty product?

• Write about the main benefits of making mistakes when learning a language and make it sound like a blog post. 

• Can you write an email asking to reschedule a meeting? 

Practicing Fluency

• Suggest 10 controversial topics to discuss.

• Suggest topics to discuss with [students / colleagues / friends, etc.]

• Write 5 debate topics.

• Write 5 inspiring ideas for conversation.

• Write 10 questions to reflect on.

• Write 5 ideas for [a TED talk / presentation, etc.]

Learning Grammar

• Correct my grammar mistakes in the following text. [add text]

• Write a short conversation in [tense].

• Write a short story using as many [gerunds / non-count nouns, etc.] as possible.

• Rewrite this text in the passive voice. [add text]

• Write 10 example sentences using [tense / grammar form, etc.]

 Learning Vocabulary

• Explain the meaning of this word.

• Explain the opposite of this word.

• Use these word in a short story: [add words]

• Write 10 sentences using this word.

• Can you suggest synonyms for this word?

• Can you show me how to use this word in a different context? 

• Can you give me another example with a different usage of this word? 

• Can you write a sentence using the antonym of this word? 

• Can you make a list of the most popular phrasal verbs and provide definitions and examples?

• Can you make a list of sports idioms and expressions in American English?

• Please give the most commonly used expressions in the business world.

• Please provide me with meeting vocabulary.

Improving Pronunciation 

• Generate a list of common words with consonant clusters. 

• Can you write 10 words with initial and final consonant clusters?

• Generate a sentence with as many words with the TH sound as possible.

• Generate a list of words with adjacent S & L sounds.

• Make a list of common words with the R sound at the beginning, middle, and end.

Creating a Study Plan 

• Please provide a practice plan for a B1 English learner to practice grammar every day for 15 min. 

• Create a vocabulary-building plan for me if I want to focus on improving business English.

• I want to improve my academic reading skills in English. Can you suggest a reading plan for me for the next 90 days?

• Can you create a 3-month IELTS study plan for me? I have 30 minutes every day to study.

Preparing for TOEFL or IELTS

• Create sample writing prompts to prepare for [TOEFL/IELTS]

• Can you give me feedback on my writing sample, including suggestions for improvement and corrections of any grammatical errors?

• Provide examples of complex sentence structures that are commonly used in academic writing.

• Write a list of vocabulary words related to a specific topic, such as technology or education.

• Write a summary of a news article or academic journal on a specific topic.

• Can you provide a sample essay or writing prompt related to a specific topic, such as environmental issues or globalization?

• Write a list of common grammar mistakes that non-native speakers make and explain how to avoid them.

• Generate a vocabulary list for [TOEFL/IELTS].

• Generate a practice test for [TOEFL/IELTS].

The quality of the responses depends on the quality of your questions. Keep asking the same question in different ways if you’re not happy with the response. 

While ChatGPT can help you immensely in many parts of your practice, it has its limitations, and cannot replace speaking practice with humans or the feedback you would receive from an experienced teacher or pronunciation coach.
